Differences Between Normal Aging Memory Changes Versus Signs of Dementia or Alzheimer’s
It can be a challenge for caregivers with aging loved ones to know the differences between normal decline in memory from aging versus identifying the early signs of serious memory-related problems.
You will need to speak with a doctor about what you are seeing to help differentiate between normal changes in memory with age versus major cognitive problems. We have compiled a few of the signs you need to note that will help when speaking to the physician during the evaluation.
If your aging loved one is consistently making poor decisions and struggling to understand why those decisions were made with poor judgment. It can be normal for an aging parent to make an incorrect decision on occasion but if you see a higher frequency of those bad decisions being made, you might be ready to speak with a doctor.
Occasionally missing a monthly payment that they have regularly made in the past can be normal for aging adults to have occasional forgetfulness. However, if you notice that your aging loved one is consistently forgetting monthly payments it could be a sign of major cognitive decline.
Aging adults may also have the momentary forgetfulness around what day it is but still know the current month or year. They might also later remember what day it is after that momentary moment of forgetfulness. If your loved one starts to forget major milestones regularly or what year it is, you should consult their physician.
Another differentiating sign between normal aging forgetfulness and a sign of dementia can be seen in regular conversation. If your aging loved one struggles to find the correct word to use in a sentence on occasion, it is typically a sign of normal aging. However, if you find your loved one is struggling to carry on a conversation and stay on topic regularly, it could be a sign of dementia.
There are a lot of other health issues that can cause some of these signs so don’t jump to any conclusions. The important thing is that you note any of these signs and immediately consult a doctor about next steps to take.
