Hurricane Season and Texas Assisted Living Facilities
Assisted living facilities across the state of Texas received a notification from the HHSC (Texas Health and Human Services Commission) on May 27, 2022 about getting hurricane prepared. Facilities are being encouraged to look at their current preparedness plan and get it updated to address any gaps that might be glaring.
You might be curious about what could change in one year for a preparedness plan but a lot of things can be taken into account. It can be a new evacuation location because previous locations are now unavailable. Staff overturn alone can be a reason for updating plans and training current staff on that updated plan. There might be several staff members not familiar with the plan and will need to know rules around transportation, communication, and caregiving.
As a caregiver, it is very important for you to not wait until disaster strikes to know the ins and outs of your loved one’s hurricane preparedness plan. If you don’t currently know a point of contact or what their rules around evacuation versus sheltering-in-place, ask an administrator. It is always important to be prepared in advance to eliminate points that may induce stress or worry for you. You may also even be able to get a copy of the facility’s preparedness plan so you know each step for the level and severity of a hurricane.
